Become a Foster/Resource Parent
As a foster/resource parent with HUFFA, you will have the unique opportunity to provide a loving home for a child – and in some cases, siblings – in need. You will be a part of their journey, helping them heal from past traumas, grow in confidence, and realize their full potential. As they navigate one of the most traumatic experiences of their lives, being separated from their families by court order.
Foster/Resource Parent Information
- In the state of California, a foster/resource parent provides a supportive and stable family home for children who cannot live with their birth parents until family problems are resolved through the courts. They may also provide homes for adolescents, for homes that have enough room to permit siblings to stay together, and for homes that may be used on an emergency shelter basis.
- A license is required. The process to acquire the license involves a licensing worker visiting your home and meeting with you and other family members. There are minimum personal, safety, and space requirements required by law. Foster parents also work with social services staff to determine the type of child best suited for their home, considering factors like age, health issues, and gender. Foster parents receive a monthly payment to cover the material needs of the children placed in their care. Medical and dental coverage for foster children is provided through the Medi-Cal program. It’s also important to note that for working parents, appropriate child care arrangements must be made by the foster parents. Age requirements for foster parents are flexible as long as your health, energy, and desire are appropriate.
