Foster/Resource Parent Information
- In the state of California, a foster/resource parent provides a supportive and stable family home for children who cannot live with their birth parents until family problems are resolved through the courts. They may also provide homes for adolescents, for homes that have enough room to permit siblings to stay together, and for homes that may be used on an emergency shelter basis.
- A license is required. The process to acquire the license involves a licensing worker visiting your home and meeting with you and other family members. There are minimum personal, safety, and space requirements required by law. Foster parents also work with social services staff to determine the type of child best suited for their home, considering factors like age, health issues, and gender. Foster parents receive a monthly payment to cover the material needs of the children placed in their care. Medical and dental coverage for foster children is provided through the Medi-Cal program. It’s also important to note that for working parents, appropriate child care arrangements must be made by the foster parents. Age requirements for foster parents are flexible as long as your health, energy, and desire are appropriate.
The detailed process to become a foster/resource parent in California involves several steps:
Complete a home study, which includes interviews with a social worker and a home safety inspection.
Custom Search for waiting children alongside one of our trusted placement professionals to find the ideal match for all.
Attend one of our free, monthly information sessions by our professionals to learn how to be a foster parent in our agency.
